VELUX
Founded more than 60 years ago, the Danish company Velux has become a global leader in skylights and roof windows. The company is based on the belief that daylight and fresh air improve quality of life, and their products are enjoyed by millions of people in homes and businesses around the world.
The firm has a long-standing relationship with Fife, which is home to a major plant that makes some of the world’s most energy efficient roof windows and sun tunnels. The plant has seen rapid growth, with the company predicting it will produce 200,000 units per week by 2025. The site is also the location of the UK headquarters for the company, a new PS7m building designed by Sinclair Watt Architects which will house customer services, training facilities and offices.
However, the company is currently facing calls to scale back its operations in joinery and manufacturing Fife. MSP Tricia Marwick, MP Lindsay Roy and council leader David Ross are set to meet managers from the company later to discuss proposals to close the Fife Joinery Manufacturing plant next autumn with the loss of 180 jobs. The company would move its distribution centre south to the Midlands in a bid to improve distribution efficiencies.
The proposal follows a strategic review of the company’s manufacturing and logistics functions across Europe. The plan is to concentrate production at fewer factories in a bid to boost the company’s “long-term competitive strength and cost effectiveness”. In addition to Glenrothes, a factory in Bagsvaerd, Denmark will close, impacting 65 jobs. Nevertheless, the UK is a “significant market” and Velux will continue to invest in the region. The company will create 30 new sales and marketing jobs in Fife as part of the plan.
