VELUX

Founded more than 60 years ago, the Danish company Velux has become a global leader in skylights and roof windows. The company is based on the belief that daylight and fresh air improve quality of life, and their products are enjoyed by millions of people in homes and businesses around the world.

The firm has a long-standing relationship with Fife, which is home to a major plant that makes some of the world’s most energy efficient roof windows and sun tunnels. The plant has seen rapid growth, with the company predicting it will produce 200,000 units per week by 2025. The site is also the location of the UK headquarters for the company, a new PS7m building designed by Sinclair Watt Architects which will house customer services, training facilities and offices.

However, the company is currently facing calls to scale back its operations in joinery and manufacturing Fife. MSP Tricia Marwick, MP Lindsay Roy and council leader David Ross are set to meet managers from the company later to discuss proposals to close the Fife Joinery Manufacturing plant next autumn with the loss of 180 jobs. The company would move its distribution centre south to the Midlands in a bid to improve distribution efficiencies.

The proposal follows a strategic review of the company’s manufacturing and logistics functions across Europe. The plan is to concentrate production at fewer factories in a bid to boost the company’s “long-term competitive strength and cost effectiveness”. In addition to Glenrothes, a factory in Bagsvaerd, Denmark will close, impacting 65 jobs. Nevertheless, the UK is a “significant market” and Velux will continue to invest in the region. The company will create 30 new sales and marketing jobs in Fife as part of the plan.

ACCESS CONTROL SYSTEMS

The access control system is designed to be integrated with other security systems such as digital video cameras and digital intercoms. By doing this it allows all the systems to communicate together so that they offer a far more integrated approach to security in the workplaces and buildings. This also reduces the amount of cabling required as everything is managed through a single network.

The switches used in these systems are more reliable than traditional switches, so they are less prone to issues like switching failures or temperature and humidity related performance problems. Most IP controllers use Linux platforms and utilize industry standard data encryption, which helps to protect them from hackers and cyber threats.

INTEGRATED FINISHING

A variety of finishing techniques alter the surface of metal products for various purposes. These include improving aesthetics, adhesion, solderability, chemical-, corrosion-, tarnish-, and wear-resistance, hardness, and flaw removal. These processes are applied manually or through automated methods, such as vibration, brushing, etching, and grinding. They also include hot blackening, which uses black oxide to increase abrasion resistance. Finally, they may involve adding color through dyeing.

Some metal finishing processes are used in the food and medical industries. For example, a #4 dairy or sanitary finish is characterized by fine polishing grit lines that are less reflective than those of a standard architectural finish. It is often used for stainless steel and other non-ferrous metals.

The choice of a finishing process depends on the metal product’s size, shape, and quality. These processes are also impacted by the product’s intended use, the cost, and the amount of coverage required. In addition to affecting the appearance of the product, some finishing processes can also enhance its structural integrity, durability, and electrical conductivity. There are numerous different metal finishing techniques, so it is important to choose the right one for your project. Some of the most popular metal finishing techniques include sand blasting, vibratory tumbling, and hot blackening. Each one requires water, specific types of coatings, energy expended, various consumables, labor, and cleanup. Additionally, some processes require a specific drying method to prevent contamination.
